PMS, BAD and the Energy Body

Bipolar Affective Disorder is defined in the Diagnostic and Statical Manual (DSM IV) by a constellation of symptoms which are descriptive but do not give a hint about what it is, why it is or where it is. Here is what the NIMH says it is.
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They are different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through from time to time. Bipolar disorder symptoms can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. But bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with this illness can lead full and productive lives.
Bipolar disorder often develops in a person's late teens or early adult years. At least half of all cases start before age 25.1 Some people have their first symptoms during childhood, while others may develop symptoms late in life.
Bipolar disorder is not easy to spot when it starts. The symptoms may seem like separate problems, not recognized as parts of a larger problem. Some people suffer for years before they are properly diagnosed and treated. Like diabetes or heart disease, bipolar disorder is a long-term illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person's life.
Bipolar disorder is primarily a biological disorder that occurs in a specific area of the brain and is due to the dysfunction of certain neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers, in the brain. These chemicals may involve neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, serotonin and probably many others. As a biological disorder, it may lie dormant and be activated on its own or it may be triggered by external factors such as psychological stress and social circumstances.
From a practical point of of view I have found that conceptualizing the existence of an energy body as part of our physical body that functions semi autonomously but synchronistically parallel to the physical or chemical body is helpful to those afflicted with bipolar affective disorder and premenstrual syndrome.
I am not comparing Bipolar with PMS at all except in the area of energy management.
This idea came from a young woman who described similarities between her PMS and her sisters bipolar depression. That got me to thinking.
In eastern thought the physical body is built on an energy system that I will call the energy body. In the west the physical body produces the energy system. Spitting hairs maybe but the Energy Body is a useful concept.
Suppose the bipolar person is blessed with a giant energy body. It is to big for the puny slow moving slow thinking physical body. Not a hard concept to grasp because those with bipolar have tremendous excessive energy causing racing thoughts, insomnia and boundless energy sometimes irritable mood. The physical body produces energy too by way of the thyroid and adrenal glands for example and the two bodies for homeostasis are required to be running at the same frequency.
Suppose that the energy body, being naturally too large, must suppress or slow itself down to the same frequency level as the physical body. Since it is to large and difficult to manage as it tries to slow down it goes past the frequency of the physical body to a less level of manifest energy which causes the physical body to feel a deep tiredness.
Then two things can happen. The physical body can lower its energy level to approximate the energy body but to do that would require the individual to be a slug which is impossible in most peoples lives. Or, the energy body can readjust and come up to the physical body which is what happens and since the energy body is to big it cannot stop at the proper level of the physical and continues to increase its manifest energy till the level for a mania or hypo mania and the cycle starts all over. A complete cycle can last a minute years.
The energy fluctuation is relatively but once polarized the level of manifest energy of the energy body can stay at a certain level from minutes to years.
Of course one system effects the other. An energy fluctuation of the physical body can can trigger a change in the energy bod.
There would be a continuous effort by both energy and physical bodies to adjust to the energy level of the other which is the reason for the "mood" swings in the bipolar condition. Therefore the bipolar change in mood is an energy dis-regulation based on the genetically determined excessive energy of the energy body (the energy of a giant crammed in a small human body). Of course the energy of the physical body may be inadequate.
I believe the depressed mood or emotion that is engendered by the energy fluctuations is a result of the the person really disliking the experience of low energy and forcing themselves to carry on in normal activity which is painful in many ways. The person hasn't the energy to do or think and the best place is in bed. In the go-to-bed scenario my impression is that the low energy cycle is shortened because less activity allows the physical body to lower energy to equilibrate with the energy body.
Most people can't easily suspend their lives and take to bed but should at least go through their day as slowly and conservatively as possible.
On the other side of the cycle when the person feels excessive energy they should foe example sing and dance because the energy itself has no direction or motive for the excessive energy but needs to be responded to.
If PMS is a drop in the energy of the energy body similar to bipolar she should be in bed for the same reasons as the the bipolar situation. If the cause of PMS is a drop of energy in the physical body the energy body would correspondingly drop energy to maintain homeostasis. For her to take to bed with out hating it is virtually impossible so just not liking the unavoidable slowdown without hating it may reduce the length of the PMS as well as the intensity because her energy bodies would be brought closer to an equilibrium.
Putting this theory in practice could increase the persons perception of the problem and then bring a better outcome rather than self hatred irritability and anger.
